Moonlight on Yvonne Woon (Interview)

I recently got the chance to chat with Yvonne Woon after I couldn't stop think about her book Dead Beautiful. I learned so much from this interview and at the end you guys are going to be as excited as me! Check out some cool links:

Interview:

What was your life like growing up?
It was lovely. I grew up in Massachusetts in a big old house with lots of nooks and crannies. My parents were both in science, so I spent a lot of time looking through their medical books at lurid pictures of diseases. It was great for the imagination.

What was your worst high school experience?
I went to a preparatory school, so I was constantly getting in trouble for being out of dress code, which never ceased to feel demeaning and mortifying, but the time that stuck with me was when one of the teachers pulled me aside and measured the length of my skirt. I used that experience in Dead Beautiful, when Renée gets her skirt measured.

If you could live in any time period and place, where would you be?
New York City in the 1960s and 70s.

When did the idea for Dead Beautiful come to you?
It came to me in pieces—the lore of burials and the soul came to me when I was reading a Descartes book for one of my classes at school. The Latin worked its way in separately, while I was doing research in the school library and saw a Latin engraving over doorway. And the love story and the characters unraveled naturally from there.

Did you base Dante and Renee after people you know? If so explain?
Dante was one of the few people in the book who wasn’t based on someone I knew. Renée wasn’t either, though parts of her personality are similar to mine.

Five favorite things?
  1. Milk
  2. Ouiji boards
  3. My sewing machine
  4. Stockings
  5. Pot-bellied stoves
Are you currently working on anything now?
Yes! I just finished the sequel to Dead Beautiful, which is called LIFE ETERNAL. It should be out sometime next winter.

Check out the Life Eternal Goodreads Page!
