Bloodlines by: Richelle Mead (Review)

Title: Bloodlines
Author: Richelle Mead
Publisher: Razobill
Date of Release: August 23, 2011
Number of Pages: 421
Synopsis From Goodreads:

The first book in Richelle Mead's brand-new teen fiction series - set in the same world as Vampire Academy.

When alchemist Sydney is ordered into hiding to protect the life of Moroi princess Jill Dragomir, the last place she expects to be sent is a human private school in Palm Springs, California. But at their new school, the drama is only just beginning.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, Bloodlines explores all the friendship, romance, battles and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive - this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone's out for blood.

Review: Okay first off, if you have never read the Vampire academy series, something is wrong with you! Go read them now! I guess you could read Bloodlines without having read VA, but you wouldn’t understand some of the references to it.

I loved Sydney as a narrator so much. She is a foil of Rose in every single way. Sydney on the outside seems perfect, but she does have issues. For instance we learn things about her childhood, that you never would think had occurred. Her father constantly is putting her down. Sydney’s perfect exterior is because of her father. Sydney is very easy to relate to, probably because she is vulnerable and Rose never was.

We get to see cameos from all of our favorite VA characters, and though they are brief, the best things come in small packages. I never realized until Bloodlines, that things were left unfinished with the minor characters in Last Sacrifice. Richelle Mead, somehow plants these little things at the beginning of the book that go off like bombs in the middle and end!

I never really realized how freaking amazing Adrian is until now. He kept me laughing the whole way through the book. The quotes you can pull from Bloodlines are genius!

While there is romance in the book, it is not as big in Bloodlines as it was in the VA novels. Thinking on it though, VA #1 didn’t have much in it though, and we see how that series played out. So I think the series will heat up in the next books. Which is fine with me!

Bloodlines is a fantastic novel, and fans of the VA series will be itching for more! I am not sure how I will survive until the next book is released!

The next book in the series is going to be titled The Golden Lily, which just sound epic, because as we know the golden lily is the symbol tattooed on every alchemist cheek.

  5. I loved the VA books, & read them back-to-back at almost single sittings each. After all the never-ending battles & excruciating heartache, I was delighted the gorgeous Dimitri (my outright favourite) finally got his happy ending.
I did feel especially bad for lovable bad boy Adrian though, & steady Eddie, Sydney & Jill, who all ended up badly in the fallout from Rose’s sagas. So I was happy to hear about the spin-off Bloodlines series, I hope will make things right for these four. I don’t know that I can wait 12-18 months for the next instalment, & hope it all wraps up nicely in 2-3 novels! With nothing too improbable or painful ahead either. Can’t take it all again & the suspense too! By the way, hope Dimitri makes things right with Adrian in The Golden Lily.
